Sovos Brands acquired Rao’s Homemade and aimed to diversify beyond pasta sauce with premium frozen entrees, emulating Rao’s New York restaurant quality. Utilizing the Rao’s cookbook and insights from Rao’s Las Vegas, Mattson developed five entrees, achieving commercial viability without compromising on taste or quality. The introduction of Rao’s Homemade Frozen Entrees into gourmet and mainstream supermarkets, including Whole Foods, significantly contributed to the brand’s growth and solidified its premium reputation. This success culminated in Sovos Brands selling to Campbell’s for $2.7 billion, marking a ninefold increase in Rao’s value during their six-year ownership.
